Reproductive Justice Initiative

The Reproductive Justice Initiative (RJI) aims to engage in the cross-disciplinary study of urgent legal and human rights issues affecting the lives of women and children around the globe, focusing on four key capacity-building areas: security and safety; health and human rights; incarceration; and education. The RJI serves as a center of excellence and specialization on those vital areas of concern.

Reproductive Justice Fellowships

If/When/How: Lawyering For Reproductive Justice is celebrating 10 years of the Reproductive Justice Fellowship Program (RJFP), a policy-focused fellowship seeking to advance reproductive justice through federal, state, and HIV advocacy. Applications for the 2022-23 fellowship year will open next fall.

The Initiative for Studying Gun Violence and Trauma

The Initiative for Studying Gun Violence and Trauma is a national task force focused on expanding awareness, discourse, and public policy on gun violence trauma. Assembled under the aegis of the University of California, Irvine School of Law’s Center for Biotechnology and Global Health Policy, the task force features a diverse collaboration of lawyers, scholars, physicians, psychologists, and advocates committed to initiating, sustaining, and acting upon this critical discourse. Efforts to raise awareness on gun violence continue in the 2020-21 academic year.

Public Health and Legal Policy

The Initiative on Public Health and Legal Policy provides a forum for collaborative engagement on matters of local, state, national, and global public health. The Initiative works to build synergies and amplify the importance of public health in law. It supports the work of scholars and graduate students to engage in policy-related programming and scholarship. CBGHP successfully collaborated with the UC Irvine School in Public Health to create a joint JD/MPH and JD/PhD program to afford UCI students an opportunity to forge new directions at the intersections of law and public health.

Antiracism, Inclusion, and Global Equality

Launched in 2021 with the support of donors, the Initiative on Antiracism, Inclusion, and Global Equality (AIGE) builds on five targeted years of programming at state, national, and international levels. The AIGE Intiative addresses structural racism, inequality, underrepresentation, and foundational impediments to human flourishing and development. The work of the Initiative is to forge transformative pathways for engagement, understanding, and research that lead to meaningful policy and social change.

Institute for Global Child Advocacy

The Institute for Global Child Advocacy is dedicated to ensuring ongoing, practical, and systematic local, state, national, and international action directed toward promoting, protecting, and advancing children’s human rights through research and advocacy. Our work recognizes that children may experience the denial of an education, lack of sanitation, violence, trafficking, abuse, oppression, and coercion in any country and resolving these issues requires collaboration and interdisciplinary interventions. Law and policy play key roles in addition to education, health policy, socio-economic stability, and cultural change. We engage in creative, collaborative research, and programming. We believe that all children deserve the right to reach their full potential in a safe and healthy environment.

Race and Science in Law and Society Initiative

The Race and Science in Law and Society Initiative seeks to address emerging concerns related to data, privacy, artificial intelligence, and the political and social constructions of race that problematically inform medicine and science. Launched in 2021, this Initiative works collaboratively with social scientists, historians, doctors, and scientists to expand and inform discourse on the role of race in medical and scientific research and discovery.
