UCI Chancellor’s Professor of Law Michele Bratcher Goodwin to Deliver the 2019 Edward L. Barrett Jr. Lecture at UC Davis
The University of California, Irvine School of Law (UCI Law) is pleased to announce that Michele Bratcher Goodwin, UCI Chancellor’s Professor of Law, will deliver the Edward L. Barrett, Jr. lecture on Constitutional Law at UC Davis. Professor Goodwin’s lecture “Policing The Womb: The Penal Risks of Pregnancy,” will take place on Wednesday, Nov. 6, in King Hall. This distinguished lecture is given once per year.
Professor Goodwin’s lecture will feature highlights from her groundbreaking research and forthcoming book “Policing the Womb,” published by Cambridge University Press. This book represents the culmination of more than a decade of research on the ways in which women’s reproductive health and rights have become vulnerable to legislative attacks, coercive criminal law interventions, and harsh civil punishments.
The Edward L. Barrett, Jr. lecture honors its namesake, Dean Barrett, who served as the founding dean of UCI Law more than 50 years ago. Dean Barrett was a renowned constitutional law and criminal procedure scholar.

More about Michele Bratcher Goodwin
Professor Goodwin researches and teaches in the areas of constitutional law, torts, health law, and feminist jurisprudence. She is the founding director of the Center for Biotechnology and Global Health Policy and its acclaimed Reproductive Justice Initiative.
Professor Goodwin is an internationally renowned voice and expert on civil liberties and civil rights. She has been featured in Politico, Salon.com, Forbes, The Washington Post, The New York Times, Los Angeles Times, and The Boston Globe, among others. Prolific in her work, she is the author of five books and numerous law review articles. Professor Goodwin’s scholarship is published in The Yale Law Journal, Harvard Law Review, Cornell Law Review, NYU Law Review, California Law Review, and Northwestern Law Review, among others.
