The University of California, Irvine School of Law (UCI Law) is pleased to announce Chancellor’s Professor of Law Michele Bratcher Goodwin will participate in presentations at the United Nations International Conference on Population and Development: Nairobi Summit on ICPD25, from Nov. 12-14 in Kenya. Professor Goodwin will moderate the plenary session featuring panelist Michelle Bachelet Jeria, the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights and other distinguished leaders and heads of state.

Marking the 25th anniversary of the first International Conference on Population and Development in Cairo, the Summit will bring together governments, advocates, health organizations, academics, activists and many other organizations as they work to bring clear commitments that will advance sexual and reproductive health and rights.

Professor Goodwin will also participate in the Reproductive Health Technologies session, which will focus on describing various sexual and reproductive health advancements and the ethical and social implications of implementing these technologies. As medical technology advances, ethical questions and conflicts inevitably arise, affecting policymakers, practitioners and individuals. The moderated discussion will also address how these technologies relate to reproductive autonomy, how they advance justice, and how they uphold the core ethical principle of “do no harm.”

Though the world has seen progress since the first ICPD, hundreds of millions of women around the world still do not have access to modern contraceptives to prevent unwanted pregnancies, and global targets on reducing maternal deaths have not been met. It is globally recognized that fulfilling the rights of women and girls is central to development. The Nairobi Summit will take an integrated approach, covering five themes and highlighting the power of gender equality, youth leadership, political and community leadership, innovation and data, and partnerships to accelerate progress throughout.
