Media Advisory: UCI Law Presents Symposium on Higher Education Access
IRVINE, Calif. — The University of California, Irvine School of Law will host the “Symposium on Higher Education Access” on Friday, September 25, 2015, from 8:45 a.m. to 5 p.m., featuring a keynote by the Hon. Goodwin Liu, Associate Justice of the California Supreme Court.
WHAT: This symposium brings together leading scholars of education law and policy, as well as experts on the workings and effects of financial aid and selective admissions, to develop a more sophisticated understanding of the continuing crisis in higher education — and to suggest a way forward.
As popular concern mounts over college costs and student indebtedness, and as we mark the 50th anniversary of the landmark Higher Education Act of 1965, panelists will address such questions as:
- How should we think about the complex system of financial aid that provides access to millions of students, even as it hobbles some of them?
- What should be the basis for determining how to fill scarce spots at the most selective colleges and universities, where members of elite faculties train students to work with the most sophisticated resources?
- What should state and local governments’ role — and goal — be?
