Media Advisory: Orange County Agencies Release First Ever Study of Domestic Violence Fatality Trends and Recommendations for Prevention and Intervention
Orange County Domestic Violence Death Review Team Analyzed Ten Years of Domestic Violence and Fatalities and Orange County Trends
WHO: Anaheim Police Department (APD) Chief of Police Jorge Cisneros, Chief Executive Officer of Human Options Maricela Rios-Faust, Clinical Professor of Law at UC Irvine Jane Stoever, Director of Wel-Mor Psychology Group, Inc., David Welch, Ph.D. and Bethany Webb, whose sister was a victim in the 2011 Seal Beach massacre.
WHAT: Joint news conference will release data from a decade-long analysis of county coroner homicide and homicide/suicide cases to identify trends in domestic violence and develop recommendations for community prevention and intervention initiatives in reducing and eradicating domestic violence. The report notes a significant increase in domestic violence fatalities occurred in Orange County during 2010 and 2011 as a potential result of stressors following the 2008 financial crisis. In addition, it outlines high rates of homicides involving firearms, and significant rates of homicide involving strangulation. The report also clearly identifies several opportunities for prevention and intervention in Orange County.

WHY: The Orange County Domestic Violence Death Review Team is an interagency team that collects and assesses data regarding domestic violence fatalities across Orange County, California. The team consists of leadership from the county’s law enforcement, probation, prosecution, coroner’s office, domestic violence service agencies, law clinics, and courts, along with researchers, psychologists, and scholars who all firmly believe that every person in their community deserves to live free from domestic violence. This drive accelerates their research which, in turn, initiates county-wide responses to prevent violence and abuse and intervene before these tragic outcomes occur.
