Swethaa Ballakrishnen
Prof. Swethaa Ballakrishnen, associate dean for Faculty Research and Development and co-director of the Center for Empirical Research on the Legal Profession, spoke at the Meeting the Need: The State of Public Defense in California conference at UC Davis School of Law on Sept. 26. Prof. Ballakrishnen was a panelist on “Exploring the Attorney Shortage,” which highlighted ongoing research on attorney retention in public defender offices, attorney deserts in California and how attorney turnover impacts representation.
Adam Cowing
Prof. Adam Cowing, co-director of the Community & Economic Development Clinic (CED), hosted John Raphling of Human Rights Watch, Faizah Malik of Public Counsel and Brooke Weitzman of the ELDR Center on Sept. 12 for a discussion on “Housing Justice and the Criminalization of Homelessness.” The panel discussion explored the findings of the Human Rights Watch report on the criminalization of unhoused people in Los Angeles.
